"Promising" - The authors of the Investing In Biodiveristy: a review of Indonesia's ICDPs call two of Indonesia's ICDP's (11)
"The intervention has improved the status of targeted species and has improved the well-being of participants. This project has worked well"- Gockel and Gray, "Integrting Conservation and Development in the Peruvian Amazon." (4)
"Has been successful at building capacity for and interest in conservation amongst local communities" - Baral et al " Integrated conservation and development project life cycles in the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal: Is development overpowering conservation?" (8)
Characteristics of Successful Integrated Conservation and Development Projects:
- Political administration and support
- ICDPs that have the support of their governments are more likely to succeed due to the legislative, financial, and law enforcement aid they receive. The Yunnan Great Rivers project was approved by Yunnan's provincial government, which has given it greater potential and accelerated its progress. (2)
- Flexibility - planning must allow for flexibility within such complex issues
- ICDPs with flexible framework are able to solve problems as they arise. The electing process for committee members in Nepal is one method that has allowed for flexibility over time, and those ICDPs have allowed each committe to navigate issues of development and conservation and focus on the most pressing issues to them at any given time. (8)
- Communication with and empowerment of local governments
- If local governments are empowered to take the issues into their own hands, less aid will be needed in the future and programs can gain more momentum and sustainability. (1)
- Strong community participation
- Projects that directly engage community members conservation or tourism activities have more traction because the people involved feel passionate about the goals. For example, WWFs ICDP in Yunnan taught mushroom harvesters sustainable harvesting practices which empowered them to feel responsible for the forest ecosystem and ensure its care for the well-being of their commerce. (13)
- Longevity
- It can take several years to find the right balance, but it is easier to improve a program that is already in place than to get a new one going. (8)
Good description of what a successful project should include, nice quotes, and I like the red panda. I feel like it would help to have more explanation for the quotes though, and for the pictures as well.
ReplyDeleteThis is also a nice section- I like how you've organized the whole blog so as to be easy to read and navigate. I would also like a few more examples in this section. Are there any case studies that show specific benefits such as increased biodiversity and economic benefits to the local population? I like the characteristics of success- it points out some concrete steps to better management.
ReplyDeleteI like the concept of the page. It could be good to include more specific examples and images to accompany them,
ReplyDeleteLove how the font really pops out!
ReplyDeleteHow would you define success though? Besides the characteristics you listed for successful projects, what I mean is what is success in terms of environment conservation and the local's livelihood?
